County officials monitoring storm; power outages possible

Hanover County officials are continuing to monitor Hurricane Florence. Currently, rainfall amounts of 2-5 inches are anticipated. There could be power outages from downed trees. If you are a Dominion Energy customer and you lose electrical power, call 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357). You can report and check outages online to Dominion here. Rappahannock Electric Cooperative customers can call 1-800-552-3904; their outage center page is here. If you experience an outage, report it immediately; the more information your power company has about outages, the more quickly they can respond.

Travel tips

When driving through the rain, expect the unexpected – be prepared to stop quickly and drive at a speed that enables you to do so. Remember to use your headlights if you are driving in the rain and avoid roads that are covered by standing water – remember, it takes only a few inches of water to float a vehicle. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. If a traffic signal is out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. If you come across a downed power line, do not try to move it – call your power company immediately. If a power line falls on your car, you are safe as long as you stay inside – if you have to jump out, be sure not to touch the car and ground at the same time.

Solid waste centers

Currently, all of the County’s solid waste centers are expected to observe their regular operating hours 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. If weather conditions force a change, it will be announced on the County’s Social Media platforms and through HAN.
