Governor announces $275 million investment in old Bear Island Paper Mill for new business

Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Cascades Inc., a Canadian leader in the recovery and manufacturing of green packaging and paper tissue products, plan to invest $275 million to establish a lightweight recycled containerboard operation in the former Bear Island Paper Mill in Hanover County. The project will create 140 new jobs. Here’s the press release from the Governor’s office. On Wednesday night, the Board of Supervisors approved a performance agreement associated with the business venture.

Board names new financial building; set to open in August

What used to be the Circuit Court building at Hanover Courthouse has been renovated and beginning next month, will serve as the new home of the Treasurer’s Office, the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office, the Department of Finance and Management Services and the Department of Internal Audit. Yesterday the Board of Supervisors named the renovated building the Chenault-Weems Building, after longtime Commissioner of the Revenue Lois B. Chenault and the late George M. Weems, who served for nearly 50 years as Hanover County’s Treasurer. More information on when the offices will open will be in next weeks’ HAN.

School Supply Drive collection boxes

School Supply Drive for needy students; here's how you can help

The Hanover Youth Service Council (HYSC) is coordinating a county-wide school supply drive. All supplies benefit Hanover’s elementary, middle, and high school students in need. The drive is through August 17. Collection boxes have been placed at locations throughout the county. In addition to donations through collection boxes, members will also conduct a live collection at the Kroger on 9351 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville on August 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.
