Youth Volunteer Service Fair & GYSD Kick Off Party

Calling all youth to "Get Out and Get Involved", this Saturday, March 17th for Hanover's Annual Global Youth Service Day Kick-Off Party, to be held at the Patrick Henry YMCA in Ashland from 12:30 to 2:30.  Youth can help with on-site volunteer mini-projects for local agencies, participate in games, enjoy music, food and most importantly, sign up to be part of the LARGEST DAY OF SERVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD--during GYSD Weekend, April 20th-22nd. Hanover County: Social Services Volunteer Front Desk Support

Hanover Social Services is seeking a volunteer to help with mid-day front desk coverage/staff support at the Bell Creek Rd Human Services Office, 8475 Bell Creek Rd. Mechanicsville, VA. Contact Daricka Jackson 804-365-4138.

Hanover County: LIT- Parks and Recreation
Apply now for Summer Youth Leader in Training (LIT) for Summer Camp programs. LIT applicants must have completed the 8th grade and be less than 17 years old. Experience working with children preferred. Duties include assisting with the planning and implementation of a 6-week summer recreation program for up to 125 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. Summer program begins mid-June.  Required training provided. Application deadline is Sunday, March 25. Use link above for details and application.

Hanover County: Phone Greeter-County Administration

Hanover County: Lunch Buddy-Parks and Recreation
Volunteers are needed to help adults with disabilities enjoy lunch at Estes Dining Hall on the campus of Randolph Macon College as part of the Community Connection Club which meets monthly. Volunteers can choose the months they wish to help participants navigate through the serving line, help them carry food tray, as well as engage in appropriate conversation. Community: Patrick Henry YMCA-Swim Lesson Aides
Volunteers are needed to help Swim instructor for lessons to be offered to John Gandy Elementary students. No experience required, roles for in the pool and out. Program runs every Tuesday and Thursday during the school day from February 27 to May 3.  Help support the life saving skills of learning to swim. Community: Hanover Senior Rides - Volunteer Driver

This program provides limited transportation to residents over 60 or persons with disabilities who do not have the resources to obtain their own transportation to doctors or other daily activities such as grocery shopping. Volunteer drivers are well screened and trained. They may select the schedules (individual rides) that they drive. Volunteers use their own vehicles but insurance coverage is provided. Hanover's Spirit of Volunteerism Awards- Nomination DEADLINE MARCH 16th

There is still time to help us honor those who have made an impact in our community.  Hanover's annual countywide volunteer awards are open to anyone who lives in or serves our county. Nomination categories honor: adults; adult groups; youth/youth groups; families; seniors; businesses; and individual volunteers who have volunteered in their roles for over 20 years. All nominees will be recognized at Hanover's Spirit of Volunteerism Celebration on May 15th.  Award recipients will be announced in each category. Up to $250 will be donated to the volunteer program served by the award recipient. Every Woman's Life Free Cancer Screenings

Every Woman’s Life (EWL) is a public health program providing services to women in the Chickahominy Health District geographic area which covers Hanover, Goochland, New Kent and Charles City Counties.   The EWL program provides access to FREE breast and cervical cancer screening and/or diagnostic services for low income and uninsured women.  The screening services provide for a mammogram and/or Pap test for women ages 40 to 64 years and diagnostic services to symptomatic women ages 18 to 39 years.   This is a grant funded program through the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  For more information and to schedule your screenings or to refer someone you know, contact Judy Marston, EWL Public Health Outreach Worker with the Chickahominy Health District at 804-365-4350 or [email protected]

Social Services Offers FreeTax Prep Assistance

Hanover Department of Social Services is part of the metroCASH program of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg.  metroCASH is an IRS-sponsored, locally implemented Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that helps families and individuals prepare their income tax returns free of charge.  The service will be offered at the Hanover Human Services Office (12300 Washington Highway) in Ashland, on Tuesday evenings from 5pm-7pm between February 6, 2018 and April 10, 2018. Sign-in begins at 4:00pm, no earlier.  The service is for households with total incomes during the last year of $54,000 or less.    For details, Hanover Social Services has a “hotline” recording with specifics on what to bring and what to expect, 804-365-6646.
 

 WIC Program-Provides Food and Health Education

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program provides food and health education to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers or legal guardians of children under 5.  Medicaid or SNAP participants with children under 5 automatically qualify. WIC is available to Virginia residents regardless of citizenship. Foster parents can also register their children.  Income eligibility is based upon family size. For more information contact the Hanover Health Department at 804-365-4335.

Hanover Habitat for Humanity Homeowner Application Process Open

Are you or someone you know interested in affordable homeownership? Habitat for Humanity homeowner qualifications include: must live or work in Hanover county for at least one year; have income of $30,375 or more depending on family size; have no judgements, collections or liens; past bankruptcy or foreclosure must be 3 full years from discharge; must be willing to partner with Hanover Habitat including a minimum of 200 of "sweat equity" on home construction or other Habitat projects.  Homes offer energy efficiency, open floor plans, carpet and tile floors and other options. visit www.hanoverhfh.org or call 804-569-6108.

Support Available for Parents of Young Children  

In-home parent education and support is available to pregnant woman or new mothers with children up to 5 years old who live in Hanover County. This service is provided in the family's own home at no cost to parents and is designed to offer education related to promoting a healthy pregnancy, positive parenting skills, child development activities and knowledge of child developmental stages. The program also assists families to connect with various community resources in order to address the needs of parents and children during the stages of early childhood. Trauma & Resilience Workshop

The public is invited to join ChildSaver's Director of Mental Health and Lead Trauma and Resilience Educator, John Richardson-Lauve, for a workshop on trauma and resilience. Learn about the Groundbreaking Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) and the power resilience plays in overcoming traumatic experiences. March 19th from 6pm to 8pm. Global Youth Service Day Kick-Off Party

Youth Groups, families and youth of all ages are invited to attend Hanover's GYSD Kick Off Party and Service Fair.  Join us on Saturday, March 17th from 12:30 to 2:30 at the Patrick Henry YMCA, 217 Ashcake Rd., Ashland, VA 23005. Free food, music, door prizes, opportunity to meet organizations and clubs hosting service projects and learn more about projects you can volunteer for.  You can also participate in games and mini services projects at the event. Special Performance for Hanover Older Adults

Atlee High School Show Choir is giving back to the community with a free concert for local senior citizens.  The special performance will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 2:15pm at the Atlee High School. auditorium.  The auditorium is wheelchair accessible and buses are welcome. Finding Value in Your Prime Active Aging Event

Hanover’s Third Annual Finding Value in Your Prime, Hanover’s Active Aging Event will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm at the Brock Center at Randolph Macon College in Ashland.  Register now to attend Hanover County's largest resource collaboration for seniors brought to you by Hanover Council on Aging, Hanover County Sheriff's Office, AARP, Ashland Police Department, Hanover Triad and Hanover County Parks and Recreation.  Participants will enjoy: breakfast; lunch; presentations on active lifestyles, health and travel; fitness and art demonstrations and activities; resources and door prizes.  Although free to attend, pre-registration is required.  Deadline to register is April 13^th.  To register, visit www.hanoverparksrec.com
