Board to hear several budget presentations Wednesday

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Board of Supervisors will hear several presentations related to the proposed Fiscal Year 2019 budget. Topics will be the Department of Public Utilities, Compensation and Benefits, the Capital Improvements Program and Revenues and the Five-Year Financial Plan. The Board will also set the public hearings and authorize the public notices associated with the proposed budget. Hanover County Administrator Cecil R. Harris Jr. presented his proposed Fiscal Year 2019 County Budget to the Board on February 14. Wednesday’s meeting begins at 3 p.m. There will be no evening session. Board meetings can be watched live online with the archived version up on Thursday afternoon.

Board adopts Comprehensive Plan update

The Board of Supervisors adopted the 2017-2037 Comprehensive Plan on February 14. The adopted plan removed a proposed commercial designation in the Hylas area of Rockville and reduced housing densities in two zoning districts within the Suburban Services Area beyond what was recommended by the Planning Commission. The Board referred the proposed “Active Living and Healthy Neighborhoods Section” to its Community Development Committee. More information on the 2017-27 Comprehensive Plan.

Registration open for Sheriff's Senior Citizens Academy

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its 11th annual Senior Citizens Police Academy beginning April 12. The academy will be held every Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Montpelier Community Center. There will be no cost for the participants. Class size will be limited to the first 30 seniors who register. The program is available to seniors 55 years of age or older who are residents, business owners, or county employees. Applicants must also be willing to submit to a background check. The deadline to apply is March 16.
