Making Holidays Bright-CountywideFinds ways to share your creativity, time and generosity this holiday season. Hanover's annual "Making Holidays Bright" wish list includes opportunities to assist county and community programs that are working to make the Holidays Bright for individuals and families in need. Hanover County: Holiday Party Staff for Adults with Disabilities-Parks and RecreationHelp put together a fun night of Holiday activities for adults with special needs. Date is December 7
th from 4:30 to 9:30pm. While it is preferred that volunteers attend the entire time, the program can accept some volunteers with more limited availability. Help is needed with setting up and taking down tables/chairs/sound system; setting up decorations; food preparation and serving drinks; unloading equipment from van and re-loading equipment back into van at end of night; being a greeters; party people - helping get the participants involved in program, selecting songs for Karaoke and helping with participants get ready for their "Karaoke" sing-a-long performance on stage. Hanover County: Youth Volunteers for Youth Leadership Workshop and GYSD Youth Planning Coalition- Community ResourcesRegistrations now accepted for the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Leadership Corps Workshop on Saturday, December 9
th, and learn how to lead your own GYSD service project. Open to ages 13 and up.
Registration also open now to be part of Hanover's GYSD Planning Coalition to assist to plan a countywide Kick Off event to engage your friends and community in service during GYSD weekend in April. Meetings will be conducted monthly from January through March. Open to ages 10 and up.

Volunteers can choose the months they wish to help participants navigate through the serving line, help them carry food tray, as well as engage in appropriate conversation. https://www.handsonrva.org/opportunity/a0CA000000oicauMAACommunity: Hanover Senior Rides - Volunteer DriverThis program provides limited transportation to residents over 60 or persons with disabilities who do not have the resources to obtain their own transportation to doctors or other daily activities such as grocery shopping. Volunteer drivers are well screened and trained. They may select the schedules (individual rides) that they drive. Volunteers use their own vehicles but insurance coverage is provided. Support for Parents of Young Children
In-home parent education and support is available to pregnant woman or new mothers with children up to 5 years old who live in Hanover County. This service is provided in the family's own home at no cost to parents and is designed to offer education related to promoting a healthy pregnancy, positive parenting skills, child development activities and knowledge of child developmental stages. The program also assists families to connect with various community resources in order to address the needs of parents and children during the stages of early childhood. Free Developmental Screenings- November 15th
The Hanover County Special Education Department will be offering free developmental screenings for children birth to 4 years of age. Specialists will be available to screen for delays in speech/language; social-emotional/adaptive; learning and gross/fine motor skills. The Department is interested in locating all children in Hanover County who may benefit from special education, infant and preschool services. The date will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 8:00 am to Noon. Locations: First Baptist Church, 800 Thompson Street, Ashland and Mechanicsville United Methodist Church 7356 Atlee Road. Free Thanksgiving Dinner-November 23rd
A free Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at First Baptist Church in Ashland on Thursday, November 23rd from Noon until 3:00 pm. Open to individuals and families who are seeking the company of a caring community, those in transit, or struggling with financial challenges.
