Board of Supervisors appoints Redd to School Board for Mechanicsville

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors appointed John R. Redd Jr. as the Mechanicsville District School Board representative at its meeting last night. Redd is an accountant who served on the School Board from 1980-84. He was nominated by Mechanicsville Supervisor Canova Peterson and the nomination was approved by a 5-2 vote, with Ashland’s Faye Prichard and Chickahominy’s Angela Kelly-Wiecek in opposition. There were seven other candidates for the seat, including incumbent Sterling Daniel. Peterson praised all of the candidates and hoped they would continue to be involved. Of Redd, he said, “it’s about education and it’s about running the business of the school system.” Redd will be sworn in prior to July 1, when Daniels’ term expires.

Elevation for Montpelier Recreation Center and Library

Montpelier Recreation Center and Library approved by Board

A new Montpelier community center and library was approved by the Board of Supervisors last night. The 20,000 square foot building will triple the size of the current library space and include a classroom, study rooms and a conference room. The two-story building also will include a new recreation center with a full-size gymnasium and two classrooms. The Wickham baseball field will be re-located and a second entrance to and from Clazemont Road added. The new baseball field could be lit and installed if funding is available after the building has been bid. The next step is completing the design. Once that process is completed and the contract has been bid and awarded, construction should take about 18 months.
