The Chickahominy District has a new representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. S. Brent Helmick was appointed by the Board today to fill the unexpired term of Angela Kelly-Wiecek, who resigned on October 6 to accept a position in State government.

Helmick is a Senior Security Solutions Architect for Verizon, where he has worked for 28 years. He is also a 24-year veteran of Virginia’s Army National Guard, currently serving as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Helmick said he had “zero” interest in a political career but when asked about a recommendation, he reviewed the qualifications and realized, “this sounds like me.”

“I am cut out for a call of service,” he explained. “I felt like this was something I could do to serve the community.”

Cold Harbor District Supervisor Michael Herzberg, who nominated Helmick, said he was most impressed when Helmick told him: “If there is s someone better than me, please pick him.”

Herzberg’s nomination was approved unanimously by the Board. South Anna District Supervisor Sue Dibble said that “collectively, we made an excellent decision.”

Helmick was chosen by the Board from a field of 12 candidates. He will serve out the reminder of Kelly-Wiecek’s term, which ends December 31, 2023. The individual who will represent the district for a full four-year term will be elected on November 7 and will take office in January 2024.

Helmick and his wife Nicole have three sons, all of whom are Atlee graduates. The youngest is a junior at Liberty University, the alma mater of his brothers as well as his parents, who have been married for 28 years.
