On July 27, the Board of Supervisors accepted the donation of 3.5 acres in surplus property from the School Board for the purpose of constructing a new fire station next to Laurel Meadow Elementary School. The School Board donated the property at its meeting earlier this month.
New Fire Station #17 will meet emergency needs in that area of the County and improve response times. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on a conditional use permit allowing the construction of the fire station on October 20; the Board’s public hearing will be on November 9.
If the Board approves the request, design and permitting would commence and take about 6 months with construction potentially beginning next summer. The budget adopted for Fiscal Year 2023 by the Board of Supervisors includes $11 million for the new Station.
Hanover received a federal grant to hire 12 firefighters for the station in 2019. Those firefighters have been deployed and are currently stationed at Mechanicsville Fire Station No. 7.
