[ARCHIVED] Matthew & Daniel Barton Memorial Rink Rededication Celebration

Barton Rink Rededication Ceremony with rink image and logos

The Washington Capitals and Hanover County Parks and Recreation will host a rededication ceremony with Schedule beginning at 11:00AM on Sunday, May 1 at Courthouse Park, 7232 Courtland Farm Road, Hanover.

The event will kick off with a street hockey clinic for individuals ages 4-17 at 11:00AM, followed by the rededication ceremony at 12:30pm. A second street hockey clinic at 1:00PM will invite parents of the participants in the 11:00AM clinic to join in a youth and parent clinic. Registration for the clinics will open in mid-April at Following the clinics, there will be exhibition games with players from Richmond Roller Hockey League.

The Capitals partnered with Hanover County Parks and Recreation, with support from Doug and Carol Barton and Doswell Energy Center to refurbish the original rink, built more than 20 years ago in honor of Matthew and Daniel Barton, the sons of Doug and Carol Barton who tragically lost their lives. Both Matthew and Daniel were hockey enthusiasts who loved to play the sport. Doug and Carol coordinated the community fundraising and donated the rink to the County. The Barton Family has twice turned what many would have found to be an insurmountable family tragedy into a shining light of service for their community and a great example of partnership between local government and private industry. Hanover County's residents will benefit from this great facility for many years to come.

The Capitals provided new rink boards, fencing, branded flooring, and nets. The organization will also provide street hockey equipment and training to all Hanover County Public Schools as well as Hanover County Parks and Recreation. Hanover County was responsible for project management, removing and repairing existing boards, fencing, brackets and surface and installing footings for the new board system.
