On September 11, 2001, over three thousand people lost their lives as a result of the cowardly act of terrorism on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Nineteen years ago and it was then that we as Americans began to witness the birth of a terrorism that no longer seemed to occur in some distant land. In that moment terror was brought to our own backyard and it was very real.
The terrorists that did that hoped in instill fear and to show weakness on the part of all Americans. Instead, they were shown the strength and resolve that makes our country great.
Amid the chaos, over 25,000 people were saved. This was the result of the heroic actions of those entrusted to maintain our public safety. We remember those heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice and are charged as first responders today, to never forget and reflect those qualities and character that embody what we should all aspire to be.
