Establishing a strong foundation of life-saving skills is one of the first steps to creating and maintaining an all-hazards response agency like Hanover Fire-EMS. Through training and community education, the staff of the Hanover Fire-EMS strives to provide elite service with compassion for a safer community. The Hanover Fire-EMS Training Center consists of classrooms and a variety of other features. These classrooms are designed for lectures, both fire and EMS. There is a separate room set up for EMS skills training. This center also has a two-bay (mock) fire station, kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoor pavilion. It also offers a state-of-the-art Class B gas-fed simulated live fire burn building that offers a variety of real-world, live fire training props. Why do we use a Class B Gas Fed Simulated Live Fire Burn Building?

• This building uses LP gas instead of wood to simulate a fire. This helps our members limit the number of carcinogens they are exposed to by limiting the products of combustions that may be in burning materials. 
• Very low smoke output from this, similar to a new grill
• It includes theatrical smoke system to make environments visually more realistic to a fire scene when desired
• It has a complex monitoring system for toxic gas and heat throughout the structure
• It allows firefighters in training to focus on flame behavior

Hanover Fire-EMS Training provides initial and ongoing training opportunities to career and volunteer members of the department. Courses offered are certified by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, the Virginia Office of EMS, the American Heart Association, and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Course offerings include:

• Fire Academy (VDFP Fire 1 & 2, Mayday! Firefighter Down, Basic Pump Operations)
• Emergency Medical Technician
• Fire Continuing Education and In-Service Training
• EMS Continuing Education Courses, including AHA, ACLS, and PALS.

Hanover Fire-EMS Paramedic Academy

Program Goals

The goal of the Hanover Fire-EMS Paramedic Program is to prepare competent, entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician, and Emergency Medical Responder levels.

Program Status

The Hanover Fire-EMS Paramedic Program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status; it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Self Study Review (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the National Registry’s Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
