Payment Methods

The treasurer’s office has several ways you can pay.

Pay Online

You can make the following payments online:

You have the option to pay by electronic check or credit card. There is a convenience fee for credit card transactions. The fee is calculated prior to authorization, so you may cancel the transaction. Any payment is on time if made by midnight on a due date.

Inquire Online

You can research, view, and print all tax billing information using our inquiry options.

Mail

To mail your tax payment, send it to the following address:

To avoid additional cost, any payment is on time if postmarked on or before a due date. Make checks or money orders payable to “Hanover County” and reference your account number on the check.

Drop Box

Checks and Money orders (no cash) can be dropped in our 24hr curbside drop box. Look for the white box located between the Wickham Building and Wickham Building Annex at the Hanover County government complex. Payments dropped off by 8 a.m. will receive the previous day’s receipt date.

Over the Phone

You may pay real estate and personal property by phone with a credit card. Call (888) 272-9829 and follow the instructions. When paying by phone, you will need to provide Hanover County’s jurisdiction code, 1020.  There are fees for using this third party service.

In Person

You may pay in person at our office in Hanover County government complex.

Real Estate and Personal Property Prepayments

Pre-payment programs are available if you would like to make monthly payments in advance of the due date for real estate and personal property taxes. You have the following options for prepayments below.

Due Dates

Various taxes, licenses, and, fees are due during the course of the calendar year.

  • January 15 - 4th quarter state estimated tax from prior year
  • February 5 - Annual personal property tax from prior year
  • March 1 - Business license and bank stock filings
  • May 5 - 1st quarter state estimated income tax
  • June 5 - 1st half real estate tax
  • June 15 - 2nd quarter state estimated income tax
  • September 15 - 3rd quarter state estimated income tax
  • October 5 - 2nd half real estate tax
  • December 5 - Real estate supplements for new construction
  • December 31 - Kennel license purchase and renewal
  • December 31 - Dog license renewal
  • 5th of each month - Supplemental billing for personal property and real estate tax
  • 20th of each month - Lodging (hotel) tax

Billing Information

The treasurer’s office mails real estate bills, personal property bills, and dog licenses’ applications.

A general guideline of the treasurer’s bill and notice mailing schedule is below to help you determine when to expect your bill and/or notice.

  • Real Estate - 1st, 2nd and supplemental bills are mailed 30 days before the due date
  • Personal Property - annual bills are mailed mid-December
  • Personal Property Supplements - bills are mailed 30 days before the due date
  • Dog and Kennel License Renewals - notices are mailed early November
