Sheriff's Office Employment Requirements

The Sheriff's Office is one of the most respected and professional law enforcement agencies in the state.  We have high standards, and only the highest caliber individual will be considered for employment. 

The Sheriff’s Office is the principal provider of law enforcement in the county and also provides courtroom security and civil processes through our Court Services Unit. These services are provided to a population of just over 100,000 citizens who live within the 471 square miles of the county.  We are conveniently located near interstates 95, 295, and 64, and have one of the best school systems in the state.  Hanover County is a great place to live and work.

Deputy Sheriff - Patrol Salary: $43,387 (upon successful completion of the Law Enforcement Academy)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have corrected vision of 20/20 or better in each eye
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid Virginia operator’s license
  • Successfully complete a written exam, physical agility test, background investigation, interview, polygraph test, physical examination, and psychological evaluation.


  • Recent or excessive marijuana use
  • Any illegal use of schedule I or II drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, LSD, or anabolic steroids
  • Adult driving under the influence of alcohol/drug conviction
  • Conviction of domestic assault
  • Any felony conviction
  • Positive result on a pre-employment drug screening 

Lateral Entry Program for Deputy Sheriff

We continually accept applications through our Lateral Entry Program.  Virginia DCJS Certified Officers have two options:

  • Financial incentive based on the years of service (up to five years)
  • Opportunity to join the agency at a step in our Career Development Program (three or more years of service), provided you meet the criteria for the Lateral Entry Program. This allows you to change agencies without losing tenure and status.
